Meet Faith Lynch

Intern Architect | Calgary Studio

Who or what inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

I was inspired to pursue architecture because of the love I have for design education. After I completed my Bachelor of Interior Design, I just wanted to keep learning and growing, largely through an academic lens, and this lead me to architecture. I was inspired to pursue architecture as a profession through many channels that my Master’s degree opened up to me, such as community engagement and local research opportunities. This time in my life helped me to realize what I wanted to pursue in the design industry, and aided me in realizing that I really care about community-focused projects that have the capacity to make great change. METAFOR has allowed me a place to explore and contribute to this change through their projects and core values.

What is your favourite part of working at METAFOR?

Definitely the people – everyone brings a great energy and really operate in terms of mentorship, from a place of compassion, understanding, and openness. Aside from that, I love that the integrated studio allows me to work in various areas, allowing me to utilize my interior design experience, as well as my architecture degree to further my understanding and practice of both disciplines. I also love METAFOR's commitment to community engagement and their core values.

What is your favorite project that you have worked on or that you are proud that METAFOR was a part of? Why?

I’m am excited to have recently joined the team for the Bow Valley Hospice project. Having had a few loved ones transition into their end of life in hospices, the intention of this project and the potential for positive impact that it has, is really important to me. This interest has extended into my involvement in the Morley Continuing Care Center project, which I am passionate about for similar reasons, as well as for the impact that this project will have on their community.

Which of our Core Values resonates with you the most and why?

Loyal Stewards, specifically “We share knowledge openly”. As someone who is in a stage of their career where mentorship is so crucial, I am extremely grateful for the knowledge and expertise that is being shared with me through the team on a regular basis.

What inspires you in life? What are you passionate about?

I am really passionate about people. From a design perspective, I have always been especially interested in end of life care and senior living, as someone who spent over 7 years volunteering and working in seniors care. These individuals that I have cared for inspire me to advocate for improved end of life care, having been a witness to the loneliness and isolation they experience. This was the focus of my final research project in school.

What hobbies, activities, or passions bring you joy outside of the office?

I’m a big reader and I am a member of a book club. I also have a passion for cooking and hosting dinner parties, brunches and other food-centric events. I am a member of a local yoga studio and use it as an outlet for stress and for keeping me grounded. I am also the captain of a recreational multi-sport league through the Calgary Sports and Recreation Club, where we compete with other teams in the city one night a week in a variety of sports.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

Japan. I was supposed to go and live in Japan for three months as part of my Masters in Architecture program study abroad trip, but COVID had other plans. That being said, I would still love to travel there one day or even spend some time working and living there. It's such a vibrant and interesting place that has a fresh perspective on design and the urban environment that in many ways is in stark contrast to ours. That really interests me.

Tell me something about you that most people don't know.

I have worked and volunteered in seniors care for over seven years. This has been a big inspiration to me in terms of my design interests and career goals.
