Employee Spotlight: John Chang

Welcome to our Employee Spotlight Series, where we take you behind the scenes to meet the incredible individuals who form the backbone of METAFOR!

Meet John Chang

Architectural Technologist | Edmonton Studio

Who or what inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

I have fond memories of Tom O'Rahilly, the first boss I ever had. He was always curious about everything and encouraged me to try new things. He assigned me many challenging tasks that helped me grow as a dreamer. He also had a quirky talent for architecture drawings with MS Excel, which I found amusing. Although I took a break from my original career and worked as a project engineer, I am happy to resume it in the exciting architecture design industries.

What is your favourite part of working at METAFOR?

Working with a group of friendly and talented coworkers is a privilege for me.

What is your favorite project that you have worked on or that you are proud that METAFOR was a part of? Why?

I have experience with notable projects such as the Hamad International Project in Doha and the Four Seasons Hotels in Seychelles. Working on these endeavors provided me with the chance to collaborate with an international clientele, diverse workforce, and a multidisciplinary team. I actively participated in the detailed design of structures like parking facilities and minarets. For those seeking both a new career path and the chance to explore different cultures, I highly recommend considering opportunities to work abroad.

Which of our Core Values resonates with you the most and why?

We Are Intentionally Curious:I think curiosity is a great way to keep my mind active and my spirit alive. I believe that curiosity is the fuel of creativity and innovation. Intentional curiosity also applies to how I relate to others. I try to show interest and respect for their views, experiences, and feelings. By being intentionally curious, I hope to deepen my understanding of myself and the world around me.

What inspires you in life? What are you passionate about?

I am inspired by individuals who possess the ability to create entirely novel concepts or transform existing ideas into something entirely different. I admire those who push the boundaries of conventional thinking, pioneering innovation and bringing about transformative change.

What hobbies, activities, or passions bring you joy outside of the office?

I enjoy shooting and editing clips of different topics. I was inspired by Jon Alpert who started his journalism career by making community story. I personally met him and talked about his idea.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

I think I travelled enough because I visited more than 20 countries. But I miss my friends from those places and I hope to see them again someday. Some of the countries I want to go back to are Ireland, Seychelles, and Qatar. I used to work there and I have good memories.

Tell me something about you that most people don't know.

I am working as an independent journalist with couple of TV news channels. It's a cool way to express myself and share stories with others.
