Meet Sean Smolik

Architectural Technologist | Calgary Studio

Who or what inspired you to pursue the career you have today?

My biggest inspiration for my career was travelling. Through travelling I was constantly in awe with the unique designs of buildings within various cultures. The one that really stuck out was Ankor Wat, Cambodia (dating back to A.D 1113). I was amazed by the attention to detail of the design and how extensive that thought process must have been.

What is your favourite part of working at METAFOR?

My favourite part about working for METAFOR is the people I work with. I think its amazing how, as a diverse group of individuals, we can turn inspiration into excellent design, while embedding our core values into everything we do.  Every day coming in, there is always something to be learned or exciting within our project work. It is a very satisfying place to be, as the work we do, really does make a meaningful impact on the communities in which we live and work in.

What is your favorite project that you have worked on or that you are proud that METAFOR was a part of? Why?

My favourite project that I worked on so far, is Rundle Park. I really got to take a deep dive modelling within Revit, in particular the glazing, and woodwork on the façade. It has been such a rewarding project to be a part while its coming together. When I saw the initial renderings, I was in awe. My favourite METAFOR project is the Bridlewood Affordable Housing development. I think that having beautiful, sustainable, and affordable housing is really important for our city, especially as the cost of living continues to go up. This projects speaks to our vision and core values and why we do what we do.

Which of our Core Values resonates with you the most and why?

I think Purposeful. This resonates with me because I am a firm believer in doing what's right and what is actually worth doing. A great deal of our project work has made such a positive impact on peoples lives, and have really highlighted our core values, for example; Bridlewood Affordable housing and the Canmore Fire Station, which is working directly towards our goals of sustainable practice.

What inspires you in life? What are you passionate about?

The thing that inspires me most in life is my desire to constantly learn and grow as a person and a professional. I find it is extremely important to never get complacent no matter what you are doing, and to always reach towards bigger goals. This keeps me motivated and excited about getting up each day and passionate about my work and where I am headed in the future. My parents really helped drill this mentality into me from a young age, by keeping me disciplined when I needed it, and allowing me to experience as much as possible.

What hobbies, activities, or passions bring you joy outside of the office?

Some of my favourite hobbies are sports, music, travelling and virtually anything outdoors. I grew up fortunate enough to be able to try literally any sport that I wanted to, and discovered hockey was my go-to. Playing sports always gave me something to look forward to growing up. I grew up in a very musically rich environment and find music is such an important part of my day-to-day life, it is always there to keep me pushing forward. Travelling is in my blood. In my early 20s I had the chance to visit Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia for two months. I loved it so much I went back for another two months two years later. My travels have taught me so much about myself, and different cultures. It has left an indelible mark on me and has formed part of who I am today.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?

I would definitely go anywhere in Europe. Its so rich in culture and history and home to some of the most beautiful architectural landmarks in the world. A big part of my love for travelling is experiencing different cultures, architecture, and sharing experiences with those across the globe. Switzerland is probably at the top of my bucket list for its breath-taking landscapes and I hope to one day spend time hiking and exploring the country.

Tell me something about you that most people don't know.

I love to hike, but I am terrified of heights. Throughout the years I have tried to conquer that fear, both successfully and unsuccessfully, but to this day I still won’t go anywhere near a roller coaster.
