This new transitional housing and supportive living facility will accommodate three distinct programmes offered by The Salvation Army (SA) in Edmonton, and replace an existing out dated facility that the SA operates in downtown Edmonton.

The design intends to bring a level of respect and independence to a sector of our population that is struggling with addiction and mental health.
Residents are grouped in private bedroom settings with shared washrooms, common area lounges, multi-purpose rooms, computer labs, activity spaces, counseling rooms and a large common dining room. Grace Village is designed with distinct three wings with clearly identified and separate entrances securely accessed by each specific resident group.The building and site create a safe and pleasant “ home like” environment centered around a core of support and administrative services.

METAFOR's scope of work included developing the Functional Programme for the facility, assisting in the evaluation of multiple possible site locations for the building, rezoning the site to accommodate the new facility and assisting in the community engagement and stakeholder workshops.
The building is designed to be highly energy efficient and to achieve zero carbon and net zero energy ready through the use of geothermal heating and cooling, the integration of 235,500 kWh /yr PV array and implementation of a design that allows for future fuel switching to full electric heating and cooling system for the building. Other unique features of the design include multiple courtyards and garden areas that integrate nature, First Nations healing, and gardening therapy and spaces for relaxation and socialization.
