Project Details

The Operations and Training Centre supports the operations of the ROAM Transit bus fleet, encouraging the shift to alternative transportation throughout Banff National Park.

The single storey 1,414 m2 building internally stores 12 buses with a canopy structure to cover an additional 20 buses on the exterior. The interior also features offices, a driver training classroom, a state-of-the-art training simulator, staff lunchroom, washrooms, and ancillary support spaces. The facility will primarily be used for bus storage and fleet administration, with a small area for light maintenance and a bus wash bay. ROAM Transit’s electric buses are charged within the facility. Roam currently operates three electric buses, with more on order.

As one of the first transit storage and maintenance buildings to pursue CaGBC Zero Carbon Building Standard Design certification, it represents an important element in the Town of Banff’s plan to reduce overall carbon emissions.
A 302.6 kW solar array over the bus storage roof areas offsets the electricity use of the facility and the charging of the electric buses. An efficient building envelope, HVAC design and lighting reduces energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. A connection to the Town’s low-carbon biomass-fueled district heating system and the use of dry wells, bioswales, and infiltration zones to treat stormwater on-site further reduces the facility’s environmental impact.
