Considered a foundational project related to the large-scale redevelopment of the East Village, this key infrastructure project provided an important connection linking East Village with Beltline communities and Stampede Park.
Project Details
Officially opening to the public November 2011, the East Village 4th Street SE Underpass features designs that are inviting and appealing to pedestrians and cyclists alike, creating a more desirable and safety oriented link.
Maintaining full CP Rail operations during construction of the underpass proved to be the project’s greatest technical challenge and success. This aspect of project implementation was achieved only through the collaboration between CP Rail, the East Village, the City of Calgary and the consulting team. Apart from wide, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks and dedicated bicycle lanes, the underpass features state-of-the-art LED lighting in its walls and handrails to make the space brighter and more engaging.
